Less Steel City, more real city.

Discover the secrets of one of the UK’s most likeable cities – and why it might just be your ideal destination. You might be excused for thinking that we fly a little under the radar of other northern metropolises. But the city has long been quietly reinventing itself as the northern capital of cool.

From stylish venues and hip regeneration projects to its wealth of green space and sustainability credentials, Sheffield is a real crowd pleaser. Little wonder we regularly feature in Time Out’s European city breaks guide.

An abundance of green space

Sheffield is the 4th biggest city in the country and yet we have a whopping 61% greenspace, more trees per person than any other city in Europe and a 1/3 of the city is actually inside the Peak District National Park, so that's probably the main reason we're The Outdoor City. We're a great destination to find venues with al fresco areas and there's lots of opportunities to build outdoor experiences into your event, like a morning jog or walk from the city centre out to one of our many parks, woodlands and wild spaces.

Sheffield is Britain’s greenest destination and was ranked the UK’s most eco-friendly city in Natwest’s Green Cities Report ahead of COP26. We're part of the UK100 Cities committed to taking climate action and we’re planting 100,000 trees over the next ten years to help achieve our vision to be a zero-carbon city by 2030.

And it’s not just our vision – rest assured that our venues have sustainability at the heart of every event.

Great Venues

We’re really proud of our high-quality venues and hotels which offer something a bit different to the usual suspects. They all have a distinctively Sheffield flavour, especially the Winter Garden - Europe’s biggest urban glasshouse.

And did you know…. Our fashionable Kelham Island district (home to uber stylish venues) was named one of the world's 51 coolest neighbourhoods in 2022 by Time Out.

20th International Coeliac Disease Symposium

5th – 7th September 2024: 600 delegates from 38 countries: Main Conference at Sheffield City Hall: Gala Dinner at Cutlers’ Hall: Satellite meetings at Mercure St Paul’s Hotel and Spa

"Sheffield was an ‘unknown’ city by comparison to previous venues; Paris, New York, Amsterdam, Prague and Sorrento, but it held its own.  In all honestly. I was proud to be a Sheffielder".Professor David Sanders, Conference Organiser

Testimonial

"Having been to all 20 of the European Hair Research Society meetings since the first was held in Brussels in 1989, Sheffield 2023 has been one of, if not, the best of the lot.  The feedback we have received has been pretty spectacular and the delegates really loved the city.  The venues were great, they loved the dinner in the Cathedral and having the Lord Mayor at the Winter Garden reception made a big impression."
