Parkrun started in 2004, with the first event held at Bushy Park in London. Today there are over 400 parkruns regularly taking place across the world and nearly 300 of them are in the UK. Six of the best are in Sheffield.
Put simply, a parkrun is a timed five kilometre (3.125 mile) running route. Organised entirely by volunteers, it’s completely free to attend and complete the parkruns, which are held every Saturday at 9am.
All you have to do to take part is register online and print out the unique barcode provided, which is then scanned and used to record your time over the route. Runners' results in each event are processed and uploaded online after the run by the volunteers. See how you did on your individual parkrun page, which shows the details and times of each run in which you’ve participated.
The popularity of running in Sheffield is highlighted by the number of registered ‘parkrunners’ in the city – in May 2014, the figure stood at almost 14,000 and this number will no doubt have increased significantly since then.
Sheffield has a thriving parkrun scene, with six regular weekly events in the city, plus one just over the border at Rother Valley, convenient for Sheffielders based further South East- meaning that wherever you live/stay, you’re not too far away from one of the events:
Junior Parkruns are open to 4 -14 year olds and take place every Sunday at 9:00am:
