Sheffield Folk Scene
Sheffield is often referred to as the folk music capital of England. We are very fortunate to have many of the UK’s most popular folk musicians living in Sheffield. There are plenty of pub sessions for songs and tunes at pubs including Fagans, The Gardeners Rest and The Grapes. Every Easter weekend there is a Sessions Festival in the pubs around Kelham Island.
There are folk gigs on somewhere most nights at venues from the larger ones at Firth Hall and The Greystones, to the more intimate café #9 in Nether Edge, Dorothy Pax at the canal basin and Shakespeares, and even the beautiful 16th century Bishop’s House.
There are over 20 active Morris, Rapper and Sword dance sides and the regular ceilidhs run by the Uni of Sheffield Ceilidh society are open to all.
But the highlight of the Sheffield folk scene for many is the local carol sings, held in pubs, mainly in Northwest Sheffield, from mid-November. These sings attract visitors from around the world to take part in singing our wonderful carols, written by local people and passed on through generations. Come and join in- you’ll be very welcome!
