Kate Griffin and Matchume Zango - Mozambique Chopi meets UK Folk.

09 Jul 2024 19.30 - 21.45

Don't miss this gig collaboration between Kate Griffin, of Mishra fame, and Matchume Zango from Maputo, Mozambique.

Kate’s talents are well known locally in Sheffield and the opportunity to work with multi-instrumentalist Matchume came during a Making Tracks online residency where they made their musical connection during Covid.

Realising the depth of their connection and creative potential they reunited in Maputo two years later to write and record an EP and perform live to Mozambique audiences.

The seeds of a UK tour were sown on the back of the Mozambique experience.

TalkingGigs is really proud to be hosting the first gig of the UK tour. The gig will be the classic TalkingGigs format including a workshop element in the first half with Matchume leading the audience in traditional Chopi rhythms, call and response chants and Mozambican songs.

The format gives us a really great opportunity to find out more about this unique cross cultural collaboration in a celebration of traditional music from Mozambique and the UK, all brought together by the five piece band.

This will perfectly set the scene for the all music second set guaranteed to get you moving on the dance floor.

Additional Information

Matchume will be showcasing his arsenal of percussion instruments, particularly the Timbila – a xylophone style instrument of tuned hard wood blocks in a low slung gentle arc played in a seated position. Coming from a long tradition of Timbila players Matchume is regarded as a master of the instrument.

Alongside Matchume will be Kate on banjo, Ford Collier (Mishra, The Drystones) on low whistle and guitar, Evan Carson (Sam Kelly & the Lost Boys, The Drystones) on drums and percussion, Ben Evans on bass (Life Aquatic Band). This is a line up of really talented musicians whose skills and dexterity will leaved you amazed and entranced and hopefully tired out from the dancing in the second half.

TalkingGigs events combine a first set Q&A with complementary music, followed by an all music second set.
