Survival of the Sickest

Sheffield will be the host city for the Survival of the Sickest junior event series next month.

The House Skatepark in Kelham Island will run the event for the first time when it comes to the city in April, with attendance from the Lord Mayor to mark the occasion.

The Survival of the Sickest event series allows junior skateboarders to compete in age category events and aims to encourage skaters onto the ‘Pipeline Project’ talent pathway for youngsters who are striving to compete at national and international events.

The event will feature 4 competitions throughout the day in the street discipline of skateboarding; with an under 16’s competitions (male and female) and under 12’s competition (male and female). Each Boys and Girls categories (at time of competition) will use an in order Jam format – detailed information will be sent to competitors prior to event.

With the emphasis on fun and progression these are a great opportunity for young skateboarders who want an introduction to competition, with Competition and Best Trick Comp (if time allows) in each of the categories. There will be prizes awarded for the top three in each age group and gender.

Entries numbers are limited at events due to the run times of the competitions, so booking in advance is essential.

Councillor Jayne Dunn the Lord Mayor of Sheffield will attend the event and is expected to do the prize giving at the end of the day.

Young skateboarders must apply to enter the event and spectators on the day are free to watch.

The House Skatepark, celebrated its 27th anniversary last year and is one of the most well known skateboard parks in the whole of the UK. The skatepark has seen some huge improvements over the last few years and this will be the first time the park has hosted a competition of this type. It is owned and operated by Rob Bannister, who co-founded the park back in 1998. Rob is also Labour Councillor for Graves Park ward with a focus on children and education.

Sheffield is home to Skateboard GB, which was founded there in 2017. The CEO, James Hope-Gill and 3 further members live and work in the city, providing support for skateboarding locally and nationally. Skateboard GB is the national governing body for skateboarding and the home of Olympic skateboarding in Great Britain, with national team rider Sky Brown taking the bronze medal for skateboard park in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games last year.
