Tree, Food, Fungi - Walk and talk at Banner Cross

22 Mar 2025 10:00 - 11:30

Siobhan O'Malley is an engaging speaker on ecology, foraging and fungi. She will lead a friendly walk tuning into the many benefits that street trees bring. We will discuss the tree palette choice of the Ulmus New Horizon (12), Zelkova serrata Green Vase (4) and Platanus Tremonia (4).

Siobhan has 20 years of experience in studying wild fungi and plant identification, knowledge of medicinal and culinary uses, scientific studies into fungi and their role in nature at a time of climate change. Did you know about the huge fungi predating trees?

She is skilled in mushroom-growing, wildflower cordials and syrups, and also brewing cider, mead and floral wines.

Starting outside Bean Boulevard, past five marvellous street trees to Huntingtower Road, then down lower Blair Atholl across Greystones Road, Onslow Road to the corner of Rustlings Road, finishing by Endcliffe Park.

Siobhan will discuss sustainability in foraging, identification techniques, the role of the fungi in the ecosystem, how they shaped life as we know it and what we can do to support them.
