Whether he’s playing at the student music society, heading to a gig or performing at an open mic night, games design student Joel lives to the beat of the city.
‘I first came to Sheffield when me and my friends travelled up for a gig at music venue the Leadmill. Walking from the hotel to the venue, I looked out over the rolling hills and thought: wow, this is so different to my normal environment.
There are plenty of places for vinyl collectors and musicians. I go to Record Junkee to get my guitar fixed or pick up accessories. It doubles up as a bar and event space too. It’s a great vibe and the staff remember your face.
Music is as much a part of Sheffield as steel. There’s a real community spirit when you’re out gigging. It’s no surprise legends like Arctic Monkeys and Bring Me the Horizon started here. I always look forward to SHU Fest at the University. It’s a celebration of culture and diversity through music, entertainment and dancing. It brings Sheffield Hallam’s societies together and lets everyone express their creative talents.’
