Once the beating heart of industry, Kelham Island is one of Sheffield’s oldest manufacturing sites, formed over 900 years ago, when a stream was diverted to power a nearby mill.

This manmade island was at the very forefront of the Industrial Revolution in the 1900s, but as times changed, industrial activity moved away, leaving the remains of numerous cutlery and steel works, factories and workshops.

Along lanes that cross the River Don, it's these buildings that give the area its distinct charm, except now they house everything from indie shopping arcades and food halls to microbreweries and galleries, while striking street art intersperses the spaces in-between...

One of the world's coolest neighbourhoods…

Several residential developments have helped breath new life into the Kelham Island, along with an array of unique and vibrant independent pubs, bars, cafes, shops and restaurants.

Where these businesses have thrived, more have followed and Kelham Island has steadily transitioned into one of the most exciting parts of Sheffield and (according to TimeOut Magazine and The Sunday Times) is now considered one of the coolest neighbourhoods in the UK, and even the world.
